Torstensen Titanic Chip Leader

The capacious ballroom of the Hilton Tallinn Park hotel today played host to the first of four days of the MPNPT Tallinn Main Event. Day 1a of the €500 + €50 rebuy event drew a total of 106 entries, of which 25 players will progress to Day 2 on Saturday. In the lead is NordicBet qualifier Terje Torstensen on 357,200 – head and shoulders above the next man.

Torstensen picked up a fair few of his chips by virtue of being seated for much of the day at a table with one Jussi Mattila, who we believe may now be holder of the title for all-time highest number of Day 1a rebuys. We actually lost count after a while (so did Mattila) but we strongly suspect he had at least seven or eight rebuys, most of them in the space of about an hour towards the end of play, before solemnly declaring, “No more,” and leaving the tournament area shortly before the end of Level 12. At least two of those rebuys went directly into Torstensen’s stack; several more of them went into young British player Andy Hills’ stack too, before Torstensen picked off Hills as well in a massive confrontation just half an hour before the close of play.

Other players of note who survived Day 1a with their stacks intact, improved or at least in the sealed overnight baggies in anticipation of Day 1b include big stacks, Alexey Manuyko on 231,400, Janis Zabovskis on 216,300 and Ermo Kosk on 201,700, David Lappin is nearer the other end of the chip counts on 43,000, but nevertheless will be returning for Day 2 on Saturday.

Meanwhile the various online qualifiers have been whisked away on a bit of a jolly to the luxurious Viimsi Spa across town, where MPN are treating them to a four-hour ordeal involving saunas, jacuzzis, multiple pools and, we suspect, more than a few drinks. We’ll report back on that tomorrow.

Play resumes tomorrow at noon local time (GMT+2), when we will be doing the same thing all over again for Day 1b. Join us right here on the MPNPT blog for all the action, direct from the floor.
