The International Language

With such a cosmopolitan field, there’s an array of different languages being spoken around the card room. Some things in poker are universal however. We bumped into Jari Hurri, who was relaxing with a beer following his sterling performance yesterday where he accumulated enough chips to leave him second on the leaderboard.

As we spoke Keimo Suominen approached – his downcast face telling a story of woe. Hurri and Suominen conversed briefly in Finnish – a conversation that ended with Suominen stomping over to the cash desk.

“Bad beat story,” Hurri confided with a smile – though it needed no translation. Last year’s winner Suominen will likely be back in action soon hoping his next conversation with Hurri will have better news…
