MPNPT @ Battle of Malta saw the final two day 1’s play out today – Day 1C starting at 1:00pm as per the two previous days whilst Day 1D played out as a late turbo – offering a last minute opportunity for hopefuls to secure passage through to Day 2.
The throngs of players swarming into Casino Malta in the International Hotel today were always going to create a mammoth field – in the end an incredible 1,548 entries packed into Day 1C whilst Day 1D added another 412 entries to bolster the numbers yet further.
It was already apparent last year’s Battle of Malta attendance would be handily eclipsed and confirmation came as re-entries closed and the final tally of players was determined at 3,815 – resulting in a monster prizepool of €1,850,760. This figure smashes a number of records, the 2018 BoM becoming the biggest poker event staged in Malta and thus the largest Battle of Malta ever by a considerable margin.
Ex-Liverpool star John Arne Riise provided some interest in the main while two further tournaments played out in parallel – Sviska Madara pipping Ana Marquez to the €100+10 Ladies Event for €2,533 whilst Daniel Hoyesveen collected €5,092.50 for winning the €150+150 PLO.
With the ever popular Fish Party causing a stir in the VIP Players’ Lounge (complete with free drinks, snacks and FIFA games) and a neverending hubbub of poker chatter and chip riffling permeating the Eden arena throughout, it was a day that many will remember. It finally ended once both Day 1’s had reached the money – Ondrej Jacubcik ending as Day 1C chip leader with 632,000 whilst Flaviano Cammisuli managed to gather an astounding 808,000 in day 1D’s flight to see him top the overall chip counts for the combined four opening flights.
The stage has been set for the Battle of Malta to move into the next key phase – playing down to the final table. Day 2 will see the remaining 572 return at 1:00pm and play out eight 60-minute levels.
The Battle of Malta has broken records on every day and we can just tell this is building to an exciting climax. Join us tomorrow to see how things play out – you won’t want to miss a moment of it! See you then.
